QUESTION: The subsidy for the oil companies that the federal government gives. They?ve gotta stop.RYAN: Sure.
QUESTION: End the oil company subsidies?
RYAN: I agree.
QUESTION: ?and you will gain a lot of that money in the red back.
Well, if he really agrees, then why did he vote to extend them? Ryan claims he wants to get rid of the subsidies as part of a long-term effort to reform the tax code, but given that there's Democratic support for getting rid of them, why not take the bird in hand and end the subsidies now? Why is he protecting the oil companies?
Oh yeah. Here's why. Republicans got more than three-quarters of the oil and gas money contributed to political campaigns in 2010. That's more than $16 million, and that's only including the stuff that needed to be disclosed. Clearly, it was money well spent.

So, the "first installment" of what promised to be a trilogy based on Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" is sinking like a stone at the box office. And the guy that paid the bills may be about to do his own little version of going Galt as a result:
Twelve days after opening "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," the producer of the Ayn Rand adaptation said Tuesday that he is reconsidering his plans to make Parts 2 and 3 because of scathing reviews and flagging box office returns for the film."Critics, you won," said John Aglialoro, the businessman who spent 18 years and more than $20 million of his own money to make, distribute and market "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," which covers the first third of Rand's dystopian novel. "I'm having deep second thoughts on why I should do Part 2."
Aglialoro's intimation of some sort of critical conspiracy glosses over a couple of unflattering details about the film's box office performance. His film is, in short, the mother of all tank jobs, which lost nearly half of its box office from week one to week two, despite actually adding 166 screens in the second week. Its per-screen average was by far the lowest of the second-week releases in the top 25 films, and has sunk to an abysmal $200 or so per day as of earlier this week (down from over $2000 on its opening weekend).
The film's anemic performance is despite the fact that right-wing political elements played a role in marketing the film, and the film was even adorably opened to the public on April 15th, presumably to take advantage of American anti-tax fervor.
Critics, virtually all of whom also wrote of the film's shortcomings in its first weekend, were more than a little unkind, to be sure. But for the film to tank that badly from week one to week two, something other than a critical conspiracy theory had to be at work, as well.
Aside from Aglialoro's entertaining conspiracy theory, two other reasons for the failure of "Atlas Shrugged" appear considerably more likely. Either (a) the community of people intrigued by libertarian fantasy is quite a bit smaller than Aglialoro anticipated or (b) the word-of-mouth was nonexistent because the film sucked every bit as much as the critics said it did.
Libertarians love to pontificate on the beauty of the market to determine winners and losers. At this point, it is safe to label this film as an unequivlocal loser.
Indeed, the marketplace has spoken. Perhaps Aglialoro, if he were true to the movement's message, should step up and say so.

So, you have your choice of headlines and polls. From Gallup, we have Americans Divided Over Ryan vs. Obama Deficit Plans, noting that Republicans love the Ryan plan, Democrats hate it and indies are split. What is also evident, though not in the headline, is that those making over 75K, whites, and those over 30 prefer Ryan, while 18-29, under 75K and non-whites prefer the Democratic/Obama alternative.
And from this, you might conclude the Ryan gamble is paying off. But not so fast. Check out:

GOP lawmaker Dan Webster's town hall turns ugly
Paul Ryan heckled by angry protestors: This will generate a lot of chatter today: According to WTMJ in Wisconsin, Ryan himself got a real earful at a town hall meeting from protestors who are furious over his proposal to end Medicare as we know it.It's early in the process, and when low-information voters are given a choice between a GOP and a Dem alternative, it's easy to pick sides even if you don't know what's in the budget.Seniors held up signs saying ?hands off my Medicare,? and chanted that Ryan should ?stop lying,? according to the report. Also note that Ryan was forced to leave in a different vehicle than he arrived in.
After you know? We'll see. But if you want examples of what the public does know, check out the GOP governors who represent the enaction of GOP principles. The latest to poll poorly once he implemented his program is PA's Tom Corbett.
Big Jump In Disapproval For Pennsylvania Governor, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Gov's Budget Unfair, Voters - Especially Women - Sayand if you want to know how the GOP responds to pressure, look no further than John Boehner.
So maybe it wasn?t the best timing in the world: Even as House Republicans face tough questions at their town hall meetings about Rep. Paul Ryan?s budget plan, Speaker John Boehner has given an interview in which he said Ryan?s plan was an idea ?worthy of consideration? and that he wasn?t ?wedded to it.?Pity the poor Speaker. The more the public knows about GOP policies, the worse Republican leaders do with the public, from John Boehner on down.
